If it is your first time playing paintball there are some important things to know before starting your first game. These include actions that set newbies apart from people that play. Do not let on to other people that you are a newbie either, for you will find yourself with lots of welts.
#1 Stay low when shooting, cover yourself at all times even when you are shooting. Many beginners make the mistake of leaning to far out of their bunkers and make easy targets. Below I have two pictures. Which one would you rather be shooting at. Try and make as low a profile as possible. The farther from cover you are, obviously the easier you will get shot.
#2 Don't shoot until you get a shot. Suprise is very important in paintball, especially outdoors. Unless you are a back player and you have to cover someone, or your opponent knows where you are, do not fire until your target is in range. Often beginers will open up upon an opponent without taking a well aimed shot. The only thing you will accomplish with this wild firing is letting your target know where you are. It is also important to wait until you are IN RANGE. Paintballs don't fly a hundred yards, at least effectively.
#3 Do not stay in the farthest back bunker the entire game and try and long ball opponents. Take ground, move up the field and put pressure on the other team. You will find that the farther you move up the better angles you will get on the other team. Try and coordinate your movements with covering fire from others on your team so you don't get shot in the reaer running to a bunker. And stay low while you run! Always present the smallest possible target to your opponent.
Use whatever you can to protect yourself from getting shot. If you look at the picture on the right you will notice that I am hiding behind a very small tree and that my left side is exposed. However, the person trying to shoot me cannot see my left side because other trees are blocking his view. This may seem like a tip only to be used outdoors but it can be applied to super ball fields as well. Use other bunkers to screen yourself from the other team, especially when running.
